Welcome to the World Academy for Endurance Medicine

Advancing medical care, one race at a time.

The World Academy for Endurance Medicine upskills the healthcare professionals who keep runners safe at World Athletics Label Road Races and mass-participation endurance events worldwide. Through hands-on training, expert-led education, and a growing global community of race medicine professionals, we help medical teams be ready for whatever race day brings.

What is the World Academy for Endurance Medicine?

A global leader in endurance and race emergency medicine — built by experts, for experts.

TFounded in 2022 as a joint venture between the World Athletics Health & Science Department and the International Institute for Race Medicine (IIRM), the Academy exists to safeguard the health and well-being of athletes and provide educational support to the medical road-running community.

Developed by experts from across the globe, the Academy gives healthcare professionals a unique opportunity to deliver quality medical leadership at mass-participation endurance events — introducing standardised medical concepts, procedures, and protocols in race medicine through eLearning, courses, and conferences.

300+ mass-participation events have implemented the programme, reaching a cumulative audience of 750+ medical staff and volunteers.

Who is it for?

The Academy supports a community of:

  • Race Medical Directors of World Athletics Label Road Races — certification required every three years, provided at no cost, as part of their continuing medical education.
  • Medical Directors, medical staff, and volunteers of mass-participation endurance races across running, cycling, triathlon, and more.
