Anna PYATYKH, Russia (Triple Jump)
Born: 4 April 1981, Moscow
Height: 1,76m; weight: 63kg
Lives: Moscow
Coach: Yevgeny Ter-Avanesov
Manager: Aivar Karotamm
Despite of the fact that sometimes she participates in the long jump, for Anna Pyatykh this discipline will always be secondary to the triple jump. Nevertheless, in 1999 and 2000, she was the Under-20 champion of Russia in both disciplines. But, on the world scene, she has achieved her best results in the triple jump.
Pyatykh finished third in the 1999 European U20 Championships (13.36m) and, one year later, gained the silver medal at the World Junior Championships, in Santiago, Chile (14.18m). Then, four years in succession, from 2002 to 2005, she won the triple jump at the European Cup, also finishing third at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki (14.78m).
That day was very anxious for Pyatykh because it was not until the last moment that she was sure she would gain the bronze medal. “I had made it my rule a long time ago: you should never dream about a medal until the last attempt of the last competitor is finished,” she said. “It makes no sense at all to stare at the indicator board”.
Although Pyatykh was happy with her medal, she had hoped to jump over 15 metres. In 2006 she had fulfilled that dream. First she jumped 15.17 but with following wind above the legal mark (+2.4 m/s) at the Super Grand-Prix in Athens. Then, at the European Championships, in Gothenburg, she placed third by jumping 15.02 legally.
Fourth in the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Pyatykh has often been close to the winners but she would like to become a world champion herself. Her aim is to achieve that at the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Valencia.
