Building bridges and inspiring talents for peace and development was the theme of the 15th edition of the Tegla Loroupe Peace Race, which was held in Kapenguria on Sunday (11).
The race was flagged off by peace ambassador and former marathon world record-holder Tegla Loroupe, Inspector General of police Joseph Boinett and West Pokot Governor Prof John Lonyangapuo.
Finishing at the Makutano Stadium in West Pokot County, the Kitale-Lodwar Highway was lined with residents cheering and clapping as hundreds of athletes took part in the 10km event.
This year the peace race brought together more than 200 reformed warriors from Karamojong and Sabei in Uganda as well as the Turkana, Pokot and Marakwet from Kenya who frequently engage in cattle rustling.
Michael Kibet and Nancy Jelagat took top honours in the elite race, while Luke Shatukei and Rosyline Lomuria were the top finishers respectively in the men’s and women’s reformed warriors categories.
Inspector general Boinett called on the communities in the region to embrace peace, insisting that neighbouring communities in the region should do away with the outdated culture of cattle rustling and banditry activities.
Governor Lonyagapuo also urged his constituents to live together in peace and harmony and promised to support the reformed warriors by working closely with them to find meaningful activities they can engage in.
