Daegu, KoreaKorea Broadcasting System (KBS), the Host Broadcaster of the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011 and the 6th Colorful Daegu Pre-Championships Meeting, an IAAF World Challenge Meeting to be held in Daegu on 19 May, announced that the Meeting will be broadcasted ‘live’ in 3D for the first time in the history of athletics.

During a press briefing held at the KBS Digital Broadcasting Experience Hall in Seoul, the Host Broadcaster announced that the live 3D airing will not only be available to the households that own 3D TV sets, but also at the capital city’s Cheonggyecheon Stream Square, where a 600-inch 3D screen will be installed. KBS will distribute 10,000 3D glasses to citizens who do not own a 3D TV or are unable to attend the Meeting in Daegu, so that they could also enjoy the historic broadcast.

KBS began its innovative research on 3D broadcasting in 2002, which led to the development of its specially-designed 3D cameras.  The historic 3D broadcast is also possible with the cooperation of US-based company 3ality Digital, which specialises in high-definition, live-action stereoscopic digital 3D.
