| The Great Dane Wilson Kipketer won his third consecutive title with a performance of 1:43.11 in a thrilling final 50 metres finish. The world record holder beat the South African Hezekiel Sepeng by just two hundredths of a second, in a final face to face only solved at the finish line. The third placing went to newcomer Algerian Djabir Said-Guerni, with 1:44.18, a new national record, who set the pace in the first two thirds of the race. His only success until today was his triumph in the World Military Games held two weeks ago in Zagreb. Out of the medals we should remark the Cuban Norberto Tellez (runner-up in Athens '97) who was fourth, and the current European champion Nils Schumann (GER), eighth. |

El atleta danes, Wilson Kipketer logro su tercer titulo
mundial consecutivo, con un tiempo de 1:43.30 en la final mas ajustada de la historia. El
recordman mundial de la distancia supero al sudafricano, Hezekiel Sepeng, por tan solo dos
centesimas (1.43.32), en un mano a mano final que se decanto en la misma linea de meta.
Tercera plaza para el sorprendente argelino Djabir Said-Guerni, con 1:44.18, record
nacional, que fue quien llevo el peso de la carrera en sus dos primeros tercios y que
llegaba a esta final con el unico aval de su titulo en los Campeonatos del Mundo Militar
celebrados hace dos semanas en Zagreb. Fuera de las medallas quedaron el cubano Norberto
Tellez (subcampeon del mundo en Atenas'97) que fue cuarto y octavo el actual campeon de
Europa, el aleman Nils Schumann.   |
