Asics prepares for the World Championships in Budapest

Nemzeti Atlétikai Központ, Budapest

Asics, sponsor of World Athletics have visited Budapest to see the venues for the World Athletics Championships Budapest 2023. After admiring the marathon route from Heroes' Square, through Andrássy Avenue, past the Parliament and to the Danube bank the foreign delegation also had a tour inside the National Athletics Centre still under construction. Asics said that both the venue and the view from it are impressive. We met Takumi Matsuda, General Manager, Global Sports Marketing, Asics Corporation on the spot.

Since 1949 your founding purpose has been to help people achieve a sound mind in a sound body. How the world, our behaviour have changed? How much more challenging is nowadays to inspire people to move?

We’ve always believed in the positive benefits of movement on the body, and the mind. It’s why we’re called ASICS which stands for ‘Anima Sana In Corpore Sano’, or a Sound Mind in a Sound Body. In post war Japan, our founder, Kihachiro Onitsuka, saw that sport had the power to lift spirits, project positivity and propel people and whole communities forward.  We still believe this today.

As we face a stress and anxiety pandemic and ever-increasing demands on our time - our purpose and committed to support more people to move for body, and for mind is more important than ever.

You will be at the heart of the sport's flagship event. Why can the world athletics championship provide a perfect fit for Asics? Why athletics is a good channel to reach people?

ASICS and World Athletics have a shared vision of the positive impact of sport on individuals, communities, and society as whole.  The World Athletics Championships is a showcase for one of the oldest, most fundamental and most popular sports - reaching millions of fans around the world - it provides the excitement and inspiration to the next generation.

How do you like Budapest? Is it possible to change a city into a running course, into a gym for 9 days next August? How will you convince the locals to switch their cars for trainers?

Budapest provides a stunning backdrop to showcase our sport and our brand on the world stage.  We are so excited by the excitement and enthusiasm from the LOC and World Athletics to work with us to see how we can engage the entire city and nation to participate and be part of the event! Our ambition would be to leave a legacy beyond the 9 days... watch this space!
