The deadline to apply to become a ‘runner’ – a volunteer during the IAAF World Championships London 2017 and the World ParaAthletics Championships in London next summer – will close midnight on Sunday 16 October, the local organising committee has announced.

Upwards of 4000 volunteers will be at the heart of the championships, helping to deliver the event in the former Olympic Stadium, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and across London. Volunteers will be a key component in the running of the 20 days of the championships, fulfilling a range of roles which include transport, way-finding, meet and greet and accreditation.

European junior 400m champion Laviai Nielsen, who was kit carrier for Jessica Ennis-Hill during the heptathlon at the London 2012 Olympic Games, has added her voice to those recommending the experience to those wanting to be part of the 'Summer of World Athletics'.

"Just being on the track a few paces behind Jess as she prepared for her race was simply the most inspiring moment," Nielsen said. "From that point on I wanted it to be me.

"Volunteering can be amazingly rewarding and to be at the forefront of a global event in the UK will just be awesome," she added. "If I wasn’t hoping to be competing, I would do it again because there is no experience like it."

Following the registration stage where more than 24,000 expressed an interest, those wanting to formally apply to become ‘runners’ for the two 'Summer of World Athletics' events have just 10 days to complete the full application form which can be found here: http://www.london2017athletics.com/volunteer

The World ParaAthletics Championships will be held from 14-23 July and the IAAF World Championships from 4-13 August.

Selection centres will commence before the end of 2016, with successful ‘runners’ confirmed in early 2017.
