 10th IAAF WORLD CUP IN ATHLETICS
ATHENS, GREECE – 16-17 SEPTEMBER 2006

Date and Location of Award of Competition
The competition was awarded to Athens (GRE) by the IAAF Council at its meeting in August 2005 in Helsinki (FIN).The dates were approved during the same Council Meeting.

General Comments
Athens has 760,000 inhabitants, but the metropolitan area has approximately 5 million people, which represents one third of the entire Greek population.

The altitude is sea level.

The climate at the time of the Championships is rather hot with the average temperature around 28°C. and average humidity of 40%, with no rain.

The Official Airport is the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”.

The venue is the Olympic Stadium where the 1997 IAAF World Championships in Athletics and the 2004 Olympic Games took place. The Stadium can seat 72,500 spectators

            - the surface brand is Mondo, laid down in 2004;
            - 9th lane laid in 2006          

The host broadcaster will be ERT.

Participation

A total of nine (9) Continental and national teams have been invited to compete: Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania, USA plus the first two teams in the Spar European Cup Super League Final 2006 (in Malaga – ESP – 28 – 29 June 2006) and the Greek team.
