Women's High Jump

The High Jump in Madrid La Comunidad Stadium was arguably the best women’s event of the 9th IAAF World Cup in Athletics. The event offered both technical excellence and thrilling suspense.

The climax was reached when the bar was raised at 2.02m and no less than three athletes were still in contention.

World champion Hestrie Cloete (RSA), representing Africa, had a first attempt clearance which was good enough for victory, a 30.000 dollars cheque and 9 points for her team.

World leader Kajsa Bergqvist, the Swedish jumping with the white vest of Europe, also cleared 2.02m but only with her second try. Bergqvist had to content with second in what has been the best season of her career.

In third, 20-year-old Russian Marina Kuptsova had two close misses at 2.02m and decided to save her last attempt for 2.04m but narrowly missed again. She eventually finished third with 2.00m, an outdoor personal best for the European Indoor champion (2.03i).

Both Cloete and Bergqvist missed their three attempts at 2.04m.

USA’s Tisha Waller had her best competition of the year and cleared 1.96m for fourth place.

While most of the jumpers started their competition at 1.80m, Commonwealth heptathlete champion Jane Jamieson (AUS) could only manage a 1.75-metre clearance but still scored a point for the Oceania team.
