Can 
Renders follow Rousseau’s golden philosophy in Brussels? 
30 April 2002 - When the 11th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships 
are staged in Brussels this Sunday 5 May, it will be the second time that this 
particular World Athletics Series event has been hosted by Belgium’s capital 
city.
Back in 1993 on the 3 October during the second 
edition of the World Half Marathon, it was a Belgium athlete who stole the men’s 
gold for the home country. 
The master of Brussels that day was Vincent 
Rousseau, then a 31-year-old Belgium army corporal, who took his place in road 
race history after a career littered with many disappointing track performances. 
There had never been any doubt that Rousseau possessed amazing versatility: a 
3:36 1500m runner who could also boast a 13:10 5000m and a 27:23 10,000 metres&nbsp; 
- but it took his sprint victory on 3 October 1993, in a national record of 
61:06 to finally prove his running brilliance to the world.
Belgium has two good medal chances for this 
year’s championship too, in the men’s race Mohammed Mourhit who has twice been 
World Cross Country Champion and in the women’s contest, the national record 
holder Marleen Renders. 
Currently in brilliant form, Renders won the 
recent Paris Marathon with a near solo effort in a new personal best of 2:23:05 
on 7 April, beating her previous best (2:23:43) which she set when winning the 
2000 Paris title.
Renders who has also claimed the 1995 Antwerp and 
1998 Berlin Marathons, has a World Half Marathon history which stretches nearly 
as far back as Rousseau’s win, with a 7th place finish in 1994 and 13th 
in 1995. 
As with the marathon distance, Renders has 
recently set a new personal best at half marathon with 1:08:56 in the Hague on 
23 March 2002, when finishing a close second behind Kenya’s Lenah Cheruiyot 
(1:08:54) who is in the Kenyan team for Brussels.
Similarly to Rousseau, Renders who is a former 
World junior record holder at 10,000m, has an admirably versatile running 
pedigree with a 15:19 5000m and a 31:03 10,000m to her name.
The question this Sunday will be whether Renders 
opts for Rousseau’s “wait and see” philosophy counting on a final sprint or 
decides for a solo effort, similar to her run in Paris. Whatever Renders’ 
decision it is certain that she, along with Mohammed Mourhit will offer Belgium 
its best hope of medal honours, when a record 64 countries take to the streets 
of Brussels for the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.

Morocco will be represented by two athletes at the IAAF World Half Marathon 
Championships in Brussels on 5 May, Jawad Gharib and 
Asmae Laghzaoui.
Jawa Gharib was a gold 
medallist at 10,000 metres in the 14th Mediterranean Games in Tunis, 
Tunisia and was the first Moroccan to cross the finish line at the last edition 
of the World Half Marathon Championships in Bristol, United Kindom last October, 
scoring a ninth place in a time of 1:01:41, ahead of his compatriots Khalid Skah 
(in 10th place) and Salah Hissou (11th).
Asmae Laghzaoui came seventh 
in the 10,000 metres at the IAAF World Championships in Edmonton in 2001 and 
took the gold medal over the same distance at the Mediterranean Games. She 
failed to finish in Bristol.
Morocco entered six men in the 
last edition of the World Half Marathon Championships and came fourth in the 
team competition.
Former Olympic 10,000 metre 
champion Khalid Skah is the only Moroccan athlete to have twice gained a place 
on the podium: in 1994 in Oslo, when he won the title and in 1998 at Uster in 
Switzerland, when he took bronze.
In the team competition, 
Morocco has one bronze medal to its credit, from Oslo 1994, where the Moroccan 
team finished behind Kenya and Mexico.
The two Moroccan athletes 
heading for Brussels are coached by the 10,000 metre Olympic champion from Seoul 
1998, Moulay Brahim Boutayeb, who is the national distance coach.

29 April 2002 - The five men and five women in the Japanese team for this coming 
weekend’s IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, were selected from the top 
performers at several recent major half marathon races.&nbsp; 
The Marugame half marathon 
in February and All Japan Corporate Team half marathon Championships in March 
were the major qualifying races. In addition, performances at the Kobe women's 
half in December of 2001, and the Miyazaki women's road race which is contested 
over the half marathon distance, were both considered for selecting the women's 
team.
Traditionally, the women's 
team is much stronger than the men's counterpart, and this year is no 
exception.&nbsp; In each of the last three World Half marathon championships, the 
Japanese women team has finished second.
The best chance for an 
individual medal in the team, of course, is Mizuki Noguchi, who finished second, 
fourth and fourth respectively in the last three World Half Marathon 
Championships.&nbsp; Noguchi, who is known in Japan as the queen of the half 
marathon, is the most consistent Japanese half marathon runner. Noguchi has not 
lost a half marathon against Japanese runners since July 2000 when she finished 
behind the future Olympic marathon champion Naoko Takahashi. 
In the 2001 World Half 
Marathon Championships, Noguchi recorded a personal best of 1:08:23 while 
finishing fourth.&nbsp; The following month she won the Nagoya half marathon in 
1:08:28.&nbsp; In January's Miyazaki women's road race (in half marathon division), 
Noguchi ran away from the field at 7Km, improving her personal best by one 
second to 1:08:22.&nbsp; She is on a roll.
Noguchi who wants to be the 
most versatile distance runner in Japan also had some success on the track, 
namely at the 10,000m.&nbsp; She was third at the 2001 National championships and 
thus was selected to run in the World Championships in Edmonton, where she 
finished thirteenth.
This year Noguchi ventured 
into a marathon, making her long awaited debut in the 2002 Nagoya International 
Women's Marathon on March 10.&nbsp; In preparation, Noguchi ran over 1700Km during 
her 48 days stay at high altitude in Kunming, China.&nbsp; For the first time in her 
life, Noguchi had done a 40Km long run (five times).&nbsp; 
Despite the unseasonably 
warm weather and running alone from 26Km, Mizuki Noguchi easily won the race in 
2:25:35.&nbsp; Although it was the second fastest debut time by the Japanese, Noguchi 
is far from being satisfied with her time, for she was hoping to surpass the 
marathon debut record, 2:23:11, set by Yoko Shibui (the record was since 
improved by Radcliffe on April 14). 
Recently the Rikujyo Kyogi 
Magazine asked her if it is too much to compete in Marathon, 10000m and then the 
half marathon all within eight weeks, to which Noguchi replied, &quot;I want to be a 
versatile runner. I will be running all events including ekiden.&nbsp; The marathon 
is only one of the events I will be running.&quot;
Her final race before the 
World Half Marathon Championships was the 10000m at Hyogo Relays on April 28 – 
RESULTS follow below -.&nbsp; Noguchi was with the leaders until two laps to go, at 
which point the pace increased to 71.3 per lap.&nbsp; She eventually finished third 
in 32:05.34, ten seconds behind the winner Kayoko Fukushi.&nbsp; In the post-race 
interview, Noguchi said, &quot;I want to climb on the top of the podium this year at 
the World Half Marathon Championships.&nbsp; Since Radcliffe is not running, this 
will be my best chance,&quot; concluded Noguchi.
Close second to Noguchi in 
the Miyazaki women's road race was Mikie Takanaka.&nbsp; A twenty-one years old 
Takanaka came into the race with 1:11:06 half marathon best from 2001 Kobe 
women's half marathon when she finished seventh.&nbsp; In Miyazaki, Takanaka chased 
Noguchi all the way, and at one point, at 15Km, she came as close as two seconds 
to the leader.&nbsp; She eventually finished 10seconds behind Noguchi with 1:08:32, a 
huge personal best.&nbsp; Her excellence at the half marathon continued, and in the 
All Japan corporate team half marathon championships in March, Takanaka finished 
third just behind Yuko Kawakami and Kiyomi Ogawa. Takanaka along with the second 
place finisher Kiyomi Ogawa were selected for the team.
The fourth member of the 
team is Yasuko Hashimoto who was a close second to Miwako Yamanaka at the Kobe 
women's half marathon on December 16, 2001.&nbsp; While Yamanaka led most of the 
race, Hashimoto tried to win the race with a big surge with 1000m to go.&nbsp; 
However, not only was Hashimoto unable to shake off Yamanaka, who finished 
fourth in the World Cross Country Championships she was also out kicked at the 
end.&nbsp; Hashimoto finished one second behind with 1:08:55. She also performed well 
in December's Japan corporate team women's ekiden championships, Hashimoto ran 
the first stage, where she recorded the fastest stage, 20:34 for 6.6Km.
The final member of the 
women's team, Mari Ozaki, perhaps is the best known runner of the bunch. In 1998 
she recorded 15:25.99 for the 5000m, and the following year she recorded 
31:58.05.&nbsp; In 2000 Ozaki finished second at the 5000m, and the following year 
she was second at the 10,000m.&nbsp; Ozaki like Noguchi represented Japan at the 
10,000m in the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, where she finished 
19th.&nbsp; However, she did not run well at the 10000m in the Hyogo race, her final 
race before the World Half marathon championships, however.
On paper, the men's team is 
nowhere near the strength of the women's team. However, there are few notable 
runners in the squad.&nbsp; Atsushi Sato who was fourth at the all Japan Corporate 
team half marathon championships and was thus selected for the team is the 
collegiate marathon record holder at 2:09:50, having broken the old mark of 
Atsushi Fujita, in the 2000 Lake Biwa marathon,.
Hidemori Noguchi, a hero of 
the Hakone Ekiden is another promising runner.&nbsp; He won the 2001 Marugame half 
marathon in 1:02:28.&nbsp; This year in the same race Noguchi improved his half 
marathon best to 1:01:55.

World Half-Marathon Championships, to be hosted by Brussels, Belgium on Sunday,

Linda Somers Smith and last year's top U.S. male finisher in the race, Scott

Team USA Announced for World Half-Marathon Championships in Brussels

O’Sullivan 
and teams from Russia, Japan and Romania lay down stiff challenge to Kenya’s 
title hopes in Brussels 
24 April 2002 – A strong Kenyan women’s team for the IAAF World Half Marathon 
Championships in Brussels on 5 May led by Tegla Loroupe a former three time 
winner of this title, will face stiff opposition from strong Russian, Japanese 
and Romanian squads.
Joining Loroupe in 
Kenya’s team will be Susan Chepkemei who in the last two years has finished 
runner up to Britain’s Paula Radcliffe. Radcliffe will not compete in Brussels, 
having only just run and won her spectacular marathon debut in London on the 14 
April, However, while her non-appearance will boost Kenya’s individual title 
hopes, the presence of Ireland’s Sonia O’Sullivan will mean no medals will be 
easily won in Brussels.
Away from the battle for 
individual glory, Kenya faces a stiff challenge in the team contest in 
particular from Russia, Japan and Romania, who all finished in the top sixth 
team places in last year’s championships in Bristol.
The Russians can boast 
Svetlana Zakharova and Lyudmila Petrova who, unlike Radcliffe will run in 
Brussels despite finishing second (2:22:31) and third (2:22:33) behind the 
British runner at the marathon in London.
Furthermore, with Japan 
fielding a strong team headed by last year’s World half marathon 4th 
placer&nbsp; Mizuki Noguchi, and Romania calling on the likes of Mihaela Botezan and 
Olaru Nuta who were 10th and 11th in Bristol, there should 
be a wonderful women’s race to 
savour in Brussels on 
5 May.
In the men’s race, the 
Kenyan’s have chosen a strong squad led by last summer’s World 10,000m champion 
Charles Kamathi who was fifth in this year’s World Cross Country Championships 
in Dublin and took second place (1 
h 00:22) in the 
Stramilano half marathon recently.
The Spanish men’s team 
who have twice taken the men’s team silver in the World Half marathon, look 
particularly strong with a 
marvellous quartet of 
marathon runners, three of whom Javier Cortes, Antonio Pena and Julio Rey ran 
sub 2:08 last year.

2002- Berlin - Kenyan dominance of Sunday’s Berlin Bewag Half Marathon was stronger than 
ever before in any of the three big international road races Berlin has to offer. Neither 
the Berlin Marathon nor the 25 k race has seen such a Kenyan sweep. In the men’s race of 
this 
22nd edition of the 
Half Marathon, the first 13 places were taken by Kenyans because there were no strong 
European runners in the event. Additionally they also took the women’s title. In her debut 
half marathon Rose Cheruiyot ran a promising time of 69:32 minutes. Peter Chebet had won 
the men’s sprint finish in 61:19 shortly before. 
From a record number 
of 14,709 entries in total, 11,365 athletes were running the 21.0975 km. With nearly 2,000 
inline skaters plus more than 1,000 pupils taking part in a 4 k race and thousands of 
spectators along the flat course through Brandenburg Gate and the city centre, the Bewag 
Berlin Half Marathon continues to close the gap on the Berlin Marathon. Both events are 
organised by the same athletics club, the SCC Berlin. 
The weather was 
perfect for most of the runners: blue skies and no wind at all. But for the Kenyans it was 
a bit too chilly in the morning, when temperatures were little above freezing level. “This 
is a very fast course. But the problem was for us that is was so cold today”, Peter Chebet 
told reporters after the race. It was only a year ago when Spaniard Fabián Roncero ran the 
year’s fastest half marathon time in Berlin with 59:52. But it soon became obvious that 
Roncero’s course record would not be in danger this time. 
A leading group of 
twelve Kenyans passed the 5 k point in a moderate 14:43. And it took some more time before 
the athletes seemed to have warmed up. In the middle of the race some kilometre splits 
were around 2:50. After 10 k were reached in 29:06 Daniel Kirui and Augustus Kavutu broke 
away from the leading group. While the group collapsed Peter Chebet, who was seventh in 
last year’s IAAF world half marathon championships in Bristol, came back to the front. 
When 15 k were passed in 43:31 (40 seconds slower than Roncero in 2001) only Kirui was 
left with Chebet. Joseph Kahugu then managed to reach the leading two runners just before 
20 k (58:06), but in the end it was Chebet and Kirui fighting for first place and 1500 
Euro of prize money. Just one second separated the two on the finish line.
“I am very happy with 
my race and I achieved what I wanted: a place in the Kenyan team for the world half 
marathon championships”, Rose Cheruiyot said. These championships will be held in Brussels 
on 5th May. The 25-year-old former holder of world best times for 5 k and 10 
miles on the road had entered the Berlin race just four days before the start. 
Passing 5 k in 16:22 
minutes she was running next to Restituta Joseph and a couple of men. But the Tanzanian 
Joseph, who has a half marathon personal best of 67:59 minutes, could not match the pace 
in the second half of the race. Rose Cheruiyot took the front and was already 21 seconds 
ahead of Joseph at 15 k (49:03). “There were no men near me after 17 k, but I had no 
problem running alone. It is a nice flat course, but it was a bit too cold for me too. 
Next time I will try to run a bit faster”, Rose Cheruiyot, who is married to the former 
5000 m world champion Ismael Kirui and has two children, said. 
This year she wants to 
concentrate on road races and try to qualify at 5000 m for the Commonwealth Games. “I will 
not run a marathon this year. But I intend to do it next year.” 
Peter Chebet also 
plans to start his marathon career next year. Meanwhile he trains together with his 
brother near Eldoret. Joseph Chebet is a prominent figure in the marathon scene, having 
won in Boston and New York.
