Kitwara wins Lisbon Half Marathon in 59:47

Kenya’s Sammy Kitwara improved his personal best by one second when he won the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon, an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, in 59:47 on Sunday (20).

Kitwara has an 11-second advantage over his compatriot Kenneth Kipkemoi coming into the final kilometre, after passing 20km in 56:38, and he extended that advantage all the way to the line.

Kipkemoi came home second in 1:00:05 with another Kenyan, Paul Lonyangata, third in 1:00:11.


In the women's race, Ethiopia’s Ruti Aga won in 1:09:16, winning a three-way battle over the final kilometre.

Her countrywoman Wude Ayalew was seven seconds in arrears while Kenya’s 2009 10,000m world champion Linet Masai was third in 1:09:33, an improvement of more than two minutes on her only previous race over the distance.
