One of the major candidates for the men's 50km Race Walking title here in Chihuahua, Mexico, Olympic champion Alex Schwazer has withdrawn from the event with gastrointestinal problems.

“It really is not possible,” the Italian champion was quoted in an official statement issued by his national federation. “I have tried to walk this morning, but I am not in condition to tackle such a challenging competition without putting my long-term objective at risks. The season is long and the European Championships are looming. I prefer not to take part here in very demanding weather conditions and on such a difficult course.”

Swchazer was due to compete in tomorrow’s 50km race walk.
