Great Britain’s Harry AikinesAryeetey today became the first boy to win the sprint double at the IAAF World Youth Championship, when he added a resounding victory in the half-lap race to his gold medal in the 100 metres from Thursday.

The powerfully-built Aikines-Aryeetey  managed to stay ahead of challengers Jorge Valcarcel of Cuba and Italy’s Matteo Calvan,  to cross the line in 20.91, a World youth leading mark.

Valcarcel was timed across the line at 21.08 and Calvan 21.14, personal bests for both of the youngsters.

Harry also pulled the three next fastest athletes to new personal records.

The victory was all the more surprising as the Cuban had appeared to beat Aikines-Aryeetey easily in the semi-final heat and the Briton had said that he was feeling the effetcs of the five competition races he had run during the previous days.
