The men’s 3000 metres ended in a dramatic comeback by Ethiopian Ibrahim Gashu to take the silver medal behind his compatriot Abreham Feleke .

The two Ethiopians had led the race from the start, with Gashu frontrunning through 1000 metres in 2:48.11, with Feleke right on his shoulder,  heading the whole field who stayed in a tight pack through to the 2000 metres mark, where Feleke took over the lead with a split of 5:33.80 and Gashu dropped back into the pack.

With a lap to go Gashu seemed to weaken and Feleke kicked out and pulled away from the pack, closely followed by Bahrain’s Saleh Bakheet and Ishaq Abedeen.

300 metres out Feleke built up to a sprint and despite a game effort by Bakheet he was unable to hold on to the Ethiopian.

Halfway though the final curve and Fekele was ten metres behind Fekele, when Gashu found some hidden reserves and started clawing back the strides, catching the Bahraini 20 metres from the line and finally dipping in front of him at the finish to take the second place on the podium.
