Girls Long Jump Final

FacebookTwitterEmail

16yearold World Youth leader Darya Klishina saved her best for her very last attempt in the Girls Long Jump final where she defeated early event leader Ivana Spanovic of Serbia by just 6 centimetres.

Spanovic opened with a season’s best 6.36m to take the lead over Klishina whose first effort was only 3 centimetres shorter.

The Serbian teenager improved to 6.39m in the second round and then 6.41m in the penultimate attempt to strengthen a lead which had never eluded her.

But one should never underestimate the resources of Russian long jumpers who have an enviable depth in this event with stars of the caliber of Tatyana Lebedeva or Tatyana Kotova.

Klishina looked like she was ready to strike when she prepared for her final attempt and despite having more than 8 centimetres to spare on her take off she landed at a new Championship record 6.47m, enough to take gold from a distraught Spanovic.

Mariya Schumilova’s fifth and sixth efforts, both measured at 6.29m, were enough for the Russian to claim bronze leaving Romania’s Cristina Sandu who had lied in third position for most of the competition in fourth.
