Men 400m hurdles first round heats

400m Hurdles MenFirst Round
The first round was highlighted by two remarkable absences: firstly, the best hurdler of this year, South African Llewellyn Herbert; secondly, the third in the season's rankings list Britain's Chris Rawlinson, who had an ankle injury during the British team staging camp in Portugal. American champion Angelo Taylor, fourth fastest of this year, failed to make the semifinals by coming third in his heat with a time of 49.58. Defending World champion France's Stephane Diagana ran a season's best with 48.55 in the fifth heat, which was the best overall with three athletes running under 49 seconds. Panamerican bronze medallist Torrance Zellner (USA) managed to qualify being one of the two fastest losers with 48.97. Costas Pochanis (CYP) did not finish the race as he fell at the first hurdle. Former World champion Samuel Matete (ZAM) took the second heat with 48.90 and seemed to be fully recovered from his recent appendix operation. Marcel Schelbert (SUI) won the sixth heat with 48.66, the second best overall this morning. The semifinals, which will take place tomorrow are wide open.

La ausencia del mejor vallista del ano Llewellyn Herbert (RSA) y del tercero Chris Rawlinson (GRB) lesionado en un tobillo durante la concentracion del equipo britanico en Portugal, marcaron unas eliminatorias en las que tambien quedo eliminado la cuarta mejor marca mundial y vencedor de los Trials Americanos Angelo Taylor. La eliminatoria mas rapida fue la quinta con la participacion del campeon del mundo, Stephane Diagana (FRA), que realizo su mejor marca de ls temporada, 48.55. Fue la unica donde tres atletas bajaron de 49 segundos. La medalla de bronce en los Panamericanos, Torrance Zellner (USA) logro clasificarse por tiempos en esta serie con 48.97. En ella tambien se produjo la caida de Pochanis (CYP) en la primera valla. En la segunda eliminatoria corrio Samuel Matete (ZAM)que vencio con 48.90 y demostro que ya se ha recuperado de su reciente operacion de apendicitis. Marcel Schelbert (SUI) logro el triunfo en la sexta serie con una marca de 48.66, que es la segunda mejor de todas las eliminatorias. Las semifinales, que seran manana, estaran muy abiertas.
