Womens Heptathlon Day Two Summary
The second national double of todays competition came in the womens heptathlon Germanys Annett Wichmann and Christine Schulz claiming first and second position respectively.
Thanks to a final 800m run in 2:21.52 which earned her 803 points, Wichmann scored an overall 5470 points to win the first heptathlon gold medal of the history of the World Youth Championships.
Her compatriot Christina Schulz who won the last and third heat of the 800m in 2:20.61 (815 points) took silver thanks to this very last event (a total score of 5346) from Frances Amandine Constantin whose 2:29.68 only gave her 675 points.
Constantin who was in the lead after day one in the womens heptathlon further improved her leading margin after the fifth event of the competition.
Thanks to a 5.95-metre leap and the corresponding 834 points she was the only one to reach the 4000 points (4061) with 5 events.
Ukraines Iryna Nikolayeva who was fifth after yesterdays achieved an excellent 6.16-metre attempt in the long jump. With 899 points she took second place to Germanys Christine Schulz who was relegated to fifth after a poor long jump contest (5.33m).
Germanys Wichmann maintained her third position adding 783 points for a 3985 total after 5 events.
It was once again after a throw event, the javelin this time, that Wichmann took the lead to Constantin. The German threw a massive 40.77m (682 points) at her first attempt whereas the French woman could only throw 33.25m (538 points).
Wichmann was leading by 68 points over Constantin and 136 points over Schulz before the 800m.
Wichmanns celebration was amazing, the girl screaming out loud just after the finish line. "Until I crossed the finish line, I couldnt believe I had won it. This was my first international competition."
Wichmann who shares the same coach as 100m hurdles world champion Kathrin Geissler went for a victory lap hand in hand with Schulz and Constantin.
Ukraines Nikolayeva who fell in the 800m race finished in 2:31.42 and had to settle for fifth overall.
