Road Races

19 August, Saturday

8:50 Men’s 20km race walk

Race walking is a discipline of track and field practiced at a high level all over the world. In the shorter race, Koki Ikeda and Toshikazu Yamanishi from Japan, Alvaro Martin and Diego Garcia from Spain, and Perseus Karlstrom from Sweden are sure to be among the ones to watch.

20 August, Sunday

7:15 Women’s 20km race walk

The biggest title contender could be Kimberly Garcia from Peru, who won not only the 20km but also the 35km at the last World Championships. Katarzyna Zdzieblo from Poland, who was a silver medallist at both the European Championships and the World Championships, will be looking to go one better this time. Antigoni Drisbioti, who achieved the double at the European Championships at the age of 38, could create an unforgettable moment for the Greek fans.

24 August, Thursday

7:00 Women’s and men’s 35km race walk

Kimberly Garcia could be the biggest favourite in this event, too. Antigoni Drisbioti, Katarzyna Zdzieblo and Quieyang Shijie are also sure to have ambitions of making it on to the podium.

In the men's race, the Japanese contenders could be challenged by the Europeans. The Italian Massimo Stano will head to Budapest as the defending champion (and 20km Olympic champion), while Spain’s Miguel Angel Lopez claimed a dominant victory at the European Championship and the Swede Perseus Karlstrom is a contender at all distances, but they will likely face athletes such as Masatora Kawano and Tomohiro Noda of Japan.

26 August, Saturday

7:00 Women’s marathon

While it is hard to predict which athletes may end up taking to the start line in Budapest, there are a number of contenders who would surely like the chance to add to the major marathon success they have already achieved. Ethiopia’s Gotytom Gebreslase is the reigning world champion who beat Judith Korir and Lonah Salpeter in Oregon, while the Olympic title in Tokyo was won by Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir from Brigid Kosgei and Molly Seidel.

27 August, Sunday

7:00 Men’s marathon

As with the women’s marathon, it will be exciting to see which stars compete in the men’s event at the World Championships. Kenya’s world record-holder and two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge has yet to win a world title in the marathon and could have the opportunity to add another global gold to the world 5000m title he won in 2003. Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola is the reigning world champion after beating Mosinet Geremew and Bashir Abdi in Oregon.
