Diego Garcia Carrera of Spain and South African Lebogang Shange have been confirmed as the overall winners of the men's 2018 IAAF Race Walking Challenge.
Lebogang Shange became the first African athlete to win a race in the Mexican leg of the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Monterrey, where Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez and Andres Chocho also enjoyed a successful weekend during the two-day Memorial Jerzy Hausleber.
“Why don’t you run?” was least of the barbs hurled at Lebogang Shange when he started race walking around Soweto.
Just a few hours after losing his 20km race walk world record he set just a week ago, although both marks are subject to ratification, Yohann Diniz attempted to claim it back at the famous Lugano race walking meeting – the 13th Memorial Morio Albisetti – but came up just short when clocking 1:17:24 on Sunday (15).
The IAAF Race Walking Challenge has been to some unusual places in its 10-year history; but, and with respect to all the other venues, none have been as glamorous as Mauritius, which hosted the African Race Walking Championships on Friday (19).
