The sport of Athletics has been recognised in national honours announcements made to celebrate the New Year.
Canada
Charmaine Crooks, a five-time Olympian at 400m, 800m & 4x400m was appointed to the Order of Canada, established in 1967 to recognise a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation.
Great Britain and NI
IAAF Vice-President Sebastian Coe was made a Companion of Honour in the Queen's New Year Honours List for services to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis were awarded the CBE, with fellow Olympic champion Greg Rutherford receiving the MBE as did Cherry Alexander (Head of International Competition, UK Athletics) and Sheila Carey (4th 1968 Olympic 800m, 5th 1972 1500m), the latter for services to Disability Athletics.
New Zealand
International Technical Official Dr Rod Syme was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit ONZM in the New Year’s Honours for services to athletics and science. Syme has been an International Technical Official since 1995 and has officiated at a number of Olympic Games and World Championships. He was president of Athletics New Zealand during the centenary year of ANZ in 1987 and he was made a Life Member of Athletics New Zealand in 2006.

L'athlétisme à l'honneur au Canada, en Grande-Bretagne et en Nouvelle-Zélande
2 janvier 2013 – Plusieurs représentants de l'athlétisme ont été reconnus à l'occasion de la publication de la Liste des honneurs de la nouvelle année.
Canada
Charmaine Crooks, qui a participé à cinq éditions des Jeux olympiques (400m, 800m et 4x400m), a été nommée à l'Ordre du Canada, distinction dont la création remonte à 1967, et dont l'objectif est de reconnaître toute une vie consacrée à des réalisations hors pair, un grand dévouement envers la communauté ou services rendus à la nation.
Grande-Bretagne et Irlande du Nord
Sebastian Coe, vice-Président de l'IAAF, a été nommé Compagnon d'honneur dans la Liste des honneurs de la nouvelle année de la reine Elisabeth II pour "Services rendus aux Jeux olympiques et paralympiques de Londres 2012".
Les champions olympiques Mo Farah et Jessica Ennis seront décorés d'un CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire). Greg Rutherford, également champion olympique en 2012, recevra le titre de MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire), tout comme Cherry Alexander (directrice des Compétitions internationales pour UK Athletics) et Sheila Carey (4e du 800m aux Jeux olympiques de 1968 et 5e du 1500m aux Jeux de 1972), honorée pour "Services rendus à l'athlétisme handisport ".
Nouvelle-Zélande
Le docteur Rod Syme, officiel technique international, a été nommé Officier de l'Ordre du mérite de Nouvelle-Zélande (ONZM) dans la Liste des honneurs de la nouvelle année, en reconnaissance de "Services rendus à l'athlétisme et à la science". Dr Syme, Officiel technique international depuis 1995, a travaillé à nombre de Jeux olympiques et de Championnats du monde. Il a été le président d'Athletics New Zealand (la Fédération d'athlétisme néo-zélandaise) à l'occasion du Centenaire de celle-ci, en 1987, et en a été nommé Membre à vie en 2006.
