The IAAF is saddened by the news that British sprinter Emmanuel ‘E’ McDonald Bailey died on 4 December at his home in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, at the age of 92.
Born in Trinidad on 8 December 1920, Bailey represented Britain at the 1948 and 1952 Olympic Games. He dominated British sprinting in the late 1940s and early 1950s and won 14 national titles.
Suffering from a throat infection, Bailey finished sixth in the 1948 Olympic 100m final. Four years later he took the Olympic 100m bronze in a blanket finish, and then finished fourth in the 200m.
Between 1946 and 1952, he won 20 of his 22 races and set numerous national records. In 1951 he set a world 100m record of 10.2, which lasted for three years.
After retiring from the sport, he returned to his native Trinidad, where he became a leading administrator, retaining his enthusiastic interest in the sport throughout his life.
