IAAF mourns the tragic death of Fijian sprinter

It is with the greatest sadness that the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has learnt of the tragic death of the young Fijian sprinter Roy Ravana Jnr.

The 20-year-old Ravana, who was studying in the USA, was shot dead on Monday (9) in Sacramento, California. Police are reported to have arrested two people concerning the incident in which Ravana was an innocent victim.

Roy Ravana Jnr (born 4 November 1993) competed in the heats of the 60m at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul and later in the same year in the 400m at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona. He was also a 400m hurdler.

The IAAF, on behalf of the global athletics family, joins with its national member federation Athletics Fiji in expressing its deep shock at the tragic loss of such a young sporting talent and the terrible manner of his death.

The IAAF offers its sincerest sympathy and condolence to Ravana's family, friends and the athletics community of Fiji.
