Tanzanian distance runner Juma dies

The IAAF is deeply saddened to hear that Tanzanian distance runner Ismail Juma died in a motorcycle crash on Thursday (2) at the age of 26.

Juma looked to be on the verge of a breakthrough. Earlier this year he won the Istanbul Half Marathon in a Turkish all-comers' record of 1:00:09. More recently, in what was to be his final race, he broke the national half marathon record with a time of 59:30 in Usti Nad Labem.

In 2015 he represented Tanzania at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where he finished ninth, and at the IAAF World Championships, where he contested the 10,000m.

He had been hoping to compete at next year’s IAAF World Half Marathon Championships and Commonwealth Games.
