Youth Olympic steeplechase champion Peter Mutuku dies

The IAAF is deeply saddened to hear that Kenyan steeplechaser Peter Mutuku died in a car accident on 10 July, aged 20.

Three other athletes – 2011 world youth 3000m silver medallist Patrick Mutunga, 2010 world junior 800m champion David Mutua and Joshua Maingi – were in the car at the time, but managed to survive.

Born in January 1994, Mutuka came to prominence in 2010 when he struck gold in the 2000m steeplechase at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. He set his 3000m steeplechase PB of 8:40.2 two years later at the age of 19.
