Three months ahead of the 2014 Maraton de Sevilla on February 23, the organisers have announced that race entries have sold out for the IAAF Bronze Label Road Race.
The 30th edition of the Spanish race, which can boast of a flat and fast course, will see a record 9000 on the start line. For the first time ever in Spain, a marathon is sold out three months ahead of the gun going off.
The race organisers said that more than 18% of the runners will come from overseas, with 48 countries represented among the entries. The largest foreign continent will come from neighbouring Portugal with about 800 runners.
The marathon continues to take in many well-known local monuments such as the Giralda, the third largest Cathedral in the world, La Real Maestranza, Torre del Oro, Plaza de Espana, Archivo de Indias, Reales Alcazares – Royal Palace. In addition, athletes will pass through the modern side of Seville, in La Cartuja, the site of the 1992 World Expo as well as some of the most picturesque and historic neighbourhoods.
The men’s course record is 2:09:53 set by Ethiopia’s Daniel Abera in 2011 while the women’s course record is 2:26:03 by Portugal’s Marisa Barros in 2009, the latter being a Spanish all-comers' record. Part of the course was used for the 1999 IAAF World Championships races when the championship was held in Seville.
