Solomon Lekuta won Kenya's third consecutive gold medal in the men's 800m at the IAAF World U20 Championships with a run that required speed, stamina, and a strong sense of self-belief.
Taking the lead from the start, Lekuta blitzed over the first 200m in 25 seconds and then settled down significantly, reaching 400m just behind Ethiopia's Adisu Girma, who finished in 52.17 with a swarm of competitors trailing him. Along with Algeria's Oussama Cherrad, Ngeno Kipngetich appeared to be the best positioned to start a gold strike.
Kipngetich's move appeared to be working halfway down the home straight, with the Kenyan hitting the lead and pulling away from Girma, but he soon had unwanted company in the form of Lekuta, who had returned from the dead and was charging down the outside. As the finish line came, Lekuta had just enough left in his legs to bring himself to the front, and he crossed in 1:46.35. Kenya's third consecutive one-two finish in the event was secured by Kipngetich, who finished in 1:46.45.
