7th IAAF World Calendar Conference Starts Today

International Athletic Foundation Seminar to Examine the Organisation of Top-Level One-Day Athletics Events

14 October 1999 - Funchal (Portugal) – The 7th IAAF World Calendar Conference is taking place here, in the capital of Madeira, from today 14 October to Friday 15 October. The World Calendar Conference schedules all IAAF sanctioned competitions world-wide.

IAAF President Dr Primo Nebiolo, who chairs the IAAF Conference, will hold a press conference on Friday 15 October* to announce the most significant points of the Calendar for the year 2000, the first year of the new Millennium.

The World Calendar Conference is also traditionally the occasion for the International Athletic Foundation to hold a seminar on a major issue concerning world athletics. For this year’s seminar, the chosen subject is "Organisational Techniques of Top-Level, One-Day Athletics Events".

The Seminar will comprise four sessions, commencing at 14.30 p.m. on Saturday, 16 October. The first session, chaired by IAAF Vice-President and Competition Commission Chairman Dapeng Lou (CHN), will cover the "Strategic Overview of the One-Day Meeting and its place in the World Athletics Calendar. Jorge Salcedo, Chairman of the IAAF Technical Committee will head the second session, discussing "Basic Organisational Factors and Services for One-Day Meetings". "Commercial Forces, Marketing, Media & Their Influence on the One-Day Meeting" will be presented and chaired by Stephan Brubacher (SUI), the Head of Athletics for ISL Marketing, while the final session covering "The In-Stadium Experience – Practical Techniques for Improving the Presentation of Today’s Athletic Meetings", will be chaired by Wilfried Meert (BEL), who is the Director of the Van Damme Memorial, an IAAF Golden League meeting.

All of the sessions will involve presentations by keynote specialists from around the world, including leading sports administrators, meeting organisers, athletes, athletes’ representatives and marketing specialists.

*Dr Nebiolo’s press conference will take place at 11.00 a.m. on Friday 15 October in the Noble Room of the Hotel Savoy, Funchal.
