African Junior Championships, Final Day

Kenya’s Godfrey Rono and Marli Knoetze of South Africa each won their second medals of these championships with career best performances on the final day at the Africa Junior Championships in Tunis’ Rades Stadium on Sunday.

Surging in the last 250 metres Rono overtook Algerian Samir Kheddar and Uganda’s Jimmy Adar on the home straight  to clinch the men’s 800m title in time of 1:47.10. In the process, he improved on his previous best of 1:47.8. Kheddar (1:47.86) was runner up ahead of Adar (1:48.79) who gave Uganda their only medal of the championships.

“Adar set a very fast pace over the first lap. Winning the 1500 yesterday (Saturday) inspired me to put in an extra effort. Next year I want to break the 3:40 barrier in the 1500m,” said a delighted Rono.

Inspired by her victory in Discus Throw on the opening day of the championships, South Africa’s Marli Knoetze set an Africa junior Shot Put record of 16.93m. The old record held by her compatriot Veronica Abrahamse (16.53) was two centimetres better than her previous best. “I am happy to have improved the record by a huge margin. After my end of year school examination I want to throw over 17 metres,” says the Knoetze

Elsewhere, Kabelo Kgosiemang’s (2.16m) High Jump victory gave Botswana their only medal at the Championships. Similarly, Discus thrower Mohamed Wadah (54.52) ensured that Libya did not return home empty handed.

Kenya’s Moses Masai (13:45.37) added the 5000m title to the 10,000m title he won earlier on during the championships.  Meanwhile, Algeria’s Chebouh Chahrazade broke the East African monopoly of middle distance victories when she won the women’s 1500m in 4 :17.06.

A late surge by Sudan saw them win four medals - Abubakar Negmedine (20.95) and Nawal El Jack (24.07) won the men’s and women’s 200m. They then went on to anchor their respective 4x400m relay teams to victory
