Former World bronze medallist Anju Bobby George reasserted her supremacy in Long Jump, while metric miler Sinimol Paulose improved at the Indian Inter-State Championships in Chennai, India, today.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which has witnessed an array of national marks since it was refurbished with a synthetic track in 1994, saw some much improved show by Indian athletes preparing for the Asian Games at Doha, Qatar, next month.

Anju Bobby George started her campaign with a 6.47m jump before improving it to 6.53m in her next try. The second-jump as usual remained her best while she registered 6.37 at her third try-out.  The 2005 Asian champion however failed in her next three attempts.

Karnataka’s Pramila Aiyappa, who held the previous meet record (6.52) in this event finished second with 6.26, while multi-event specialist J.J. Shobha from Andhra Pradesh - who had won the open nationals at Delhi last month - settled with a bronze having jumped to 6.07m.

The ever-improving Kerala athlete Sinimol Paulose stamped her seal in women’s 1500m by clocking a career best of 4:10.51, a performance which put her into 4th place in the Asian seasonal standings.

South Asian Games victor Soundararajan Shanthi also bettered the previous meet mark in second place (4:11.66).  Asian Indoor Games double gold medallist O.P. Jaisha was third with 4:15.97.

Hardeep Kaur accounted for the third meet record of the day as she took the women’s Hammer Throw title with a throw of 60.79m.

The five-day meet, dubbed as the final selection trials for the Asian Games began on Wednesday (1 Nov) with the 10,000m finals for men and women.  The meeting which is being organized by the Chennai Port Trust as part of their Golden Jubilee celebration had a formal inauguration today. The member-secretary of Sports Development of Authority of Tamil Nadu Ms. Apoorva, declared open the meet.
