Athletics Kenya – Third weekend track meeting

FacebookTwitterEmail

The third Athletics Kenya Commonwealth Games trials meet held on a murram track at a stadium, 420km west of the capital, Nairobi, despite a low turnout, produced some good competition.

The hero of the day was 18-year-old Stephen Chelimo from Iten, the winner of the 10,000 metres who clocked 30:01.2 in extremely hot conditions. He made his winning move in the final lap when he broke away from fast fading local Kipkemboi Chebor (30:11.2) and Jackson Kirwa (30:21.4).

Team mate David Chemweno won the 5000m in similar fashion in 14:03.1 ahead of Benson Kipnaibei (14:09.0) and Prison warder Jonathan Komen (14:12.4).

The men's 3000m steeplechase was rather slow although winner James Cheptuyon tried to inject some pace alone in the closing stages in posting 8:34.1 followed by Bisluke Kipkorir in 8:41.3 and Hilary Mdogen of Mt Elgon (8:47.7).

Irene Kwambai of the Armed Forces easily won the women's 5000 metres, albeit in a slowish 16:42.3.  Vivian Jerono of Kabiego was a distant second in 16:57.4 while Jane Kibii of Iten was third in 17:15.8.

Beatrice Jepchumba set a blistering pace in the women's 3000 metres Steeplechase to beat her only rival, Edna Kimaiyo of Adidas, in 9:06.1. Kimaiyo finished in 9:46.3.
