Bahamas' premier gives Olympic runners 400,000 dollar land plots for bringing home gold
3 May 2002 - Nassau, Bahamas (AP)  - The Prime minister of Bahamas has awarded 2 million dollars in coastal land to five members of 400-metre relay team for bringing home gold medals in 2000.

Prime Minister Hugh Ingraham on Wednesday gave each of the five women dubbed “The Golden Girls” a 200,000 square-foot (18,000 square-metre) plot just outside the capital, Nassau, on New Providence Island.

“When we first started out in track and field we never knew all of these great things would happen for us,” said team member Pauline Davis-Thompson. “It just shows you in life that if you work hard and consistently, everything will pay off for you.”

Each 400,000 dollar plot sits on a hill overlooking the ocean, Davis-Thompson confirmed.

The five women have already each received 40,000 dollars in award money and a commemorative gold coin.

The Olympic 4x 400m relay team consisted of Davis-Thompson, Debbie Ferguson, Chandra Sturrup, Eldece Clarke-Lewis, and Sevetheda Fynes. Sturrup and Fynes were not at Wednesday's ceremony.

The Bahamas is made up of 700 islands. With a population of 290,000, the country has one of the most prosperous economies in the Caribbean, based largely on tourism and thousands of offshore banks.
