Barber excels in Goetzis

FacebookTwitterEmail

4 June 2000 – Goetzis, Austria - As expected, the Sevilla 99 Champions were also the champions in Goetzis. An extremely focused Eunice Barber, despite an pain in her left shoulder which practically prevented her from moving her left arm (this was visible most particularly during the 200m on Saturday), carried off the second best performance of her career , only 19 points from the 6861 which made her World Champion in Seville last year.

Barber performed superbly on the second day, with a good showing in the long jump (6.85m), her javelin throwing considerably improved since the Spanish competition and she closed with a good 800m.

Displaying massive improvement (143 points), Russia’s Roshchupkina, took second place ahead of evergreen Sabine Braun, still at the top of Germany’s finest. Braun’s performance here will no doubt open the door to a place on her fifth Olympic team at the age of 35 (her birthday is coming up very soon – June 20). Burrell and Specht-Erth also managed to set personal bests here in Goetzis.

All in all, this year’s meeting was a stunning success. From memory, the most expert fans of combined events could not remember another meeting where 10 athletes scored over 6200 points as was the case at this Hypo-Meeting. Two national records where also set: Maralize Visser Fouche for South Africa (the first time she had scored over 6000 points) and Anzhela Atroshchenko Kinet for Turkey, improving the record she set only three weeks ago at the Multistars meeting in Desenzano del Garda.
