World 100m champion Yohan Blake and World 200m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown will compete at the Edmonton International Track Classic on 29 June.
Blake, the youngest World 100m champion in history, will be looking to defend his title from last year when he won in 10.05. Meanwhile, Campbell-Brown will be competing on Canadian soil for the first time in her long career.
Both athletes are coming off successful London Olympic Games campaigns where Blake won silver in the 100m and 200m and gold in the 4x100m Relay, setting a World record. Campbell-Brown took bronze in the 100m sprint and silver in the 4x100m Relay, having taken 200m gold at the two previous editions of the Olympic Games.
“I’m very happy to be coming back to Edmonton and I’m looking forward to breaking the 10-second barrier in front of some of the best fans in the world,” said Blake. Should the Jamaican succeed in breaking that mark, it would be the first time it has been achieved on Canadian soil since the 2001 IAAF World Championships in the same city.
“I’m thoroughly excited at the prospect of competing in Canada for the first time, and in Edmonton –home of the 2001 World Championships – to boot,” said Campbell-Brown. “I have monitored the results from previous Canadian summer circuits, and I’m keen to compete in front of supportive fans!”
Blake and Campbell-Brown, along with many other World Champions and Olympic medallists, will meet at Foote Field Stadium for the third of five stops in the 2013 National Track League series. The Edmonton International Track Classic gives athletes an opportunity to compete in Canada against some of the best in the world in their quest for success at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow, August 10-18.
