Bucher out for at least six weeks with foot injury
2 May 2002 - Geneva (Reuters) - Switzerland's World 800m champion Andre Bucher has been sidelined for at least six weeks after fracturing his left foot during training.

Bucher told Swiss Sport Information Agency on Thursday that the injury would force him to miss the European Cup in June and July's Grand Prix meeting in Lausanne. But the 28-year-old refused to be drawn on whether he would make the European championships in Munich in August.

"That all depends on how quickly the injury heals," he said.

Bucher, who became Switzerland's first track World Champion when he won the 800 metres title last year in Edmonton, suffered the injury while running around a bend.

"I'm not going to get too down about it," Bucher said. "But it means the first half of the season is over for me."

As well as winning the World 800m title last summer, Bucher also won the overall men's IAAF Grand Prix with 78 points for the season, just two ahead of USA's World Champion hurdler Allen Johnson.
