GibraltarJonus Buud of Sweden and Kami Semick of the USA will be the leading contenders for top honours at the 24th IAU 100Km World Championship & 19th European Championship on Sunday (7) in Gibraltar.

Gibraltar, a nation of just 30,000 people, is one of IAU’s newest members and is already a two-time host of Major IAU championship. It is located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar.

In the men’s race, Yasakazu Miyazato of Japan won’t be defending his title, leaving the door open for Buud, the 2009 silver medallist and European Champion. Buud ran 6:41:49 to finish second last year, followed by a former World champion Giorgio Calcaterra of Italy who clocked 6:42:04. Calcaterra has had a strong season this year having run the world leading time of 6:28:52 at the Seregno 100Km in Italy. Jaroslaw Janicki of Poland, also a former podium finisher at the world championships, has one of the top times this year at 6:40:00.

In the women’s race, Semick, the 2009 World champion over the 100Km distance and also the top finisher at the 50Km World Trophy Final, is back to the defend her long distance title. She won this race last year in 7:37:23.

Accompanying Semick in the top three times in 2008-2010 is World Trophy Final silver medallist and third place finisher at last year’s edition of 100km in Torhout, Monica Carlin of Italy, who has a world leading time of 7:35:38. Rounding out the top-3 is a former elite triathlete and Commonwealth Champion Jackie Fairweather of Australia with a time of 7:41:23.

The race is scheduled to start at 0630 local time. It promises to be an exciting event with the top-5 men all under 6:45 and top-5 women under 7:50.

The 100Km event this year also sees the return of the masters section. The athletes entered to compete in the Masters event will run alongside those battling for the World title. The Masters section is being organized in collaboration with World Masters Athletics.
