Christine Arron to train in US with John Smith

11 December 2000 - Paris - France's European 100 metre champion Christine Arron announced on Monday that she is to join the California-based training group of John Smith, coach of Olympic sprint king Maurice Greene.

Arron, 27, wants to re-launch her career after a disappointing performance in the Sydney Olympics when she was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 100m and was part of the 4x100m relay squad that finished fourth.

The Guadeloupe-born athlete parted company with her coach Jacques Piasenta on the eve of the Olympics.

Arron, who holds the European 100m record at 10.73sec, met other American coaches before deciding to team up with Smith in Los Angeles, where he also coaches top sprinters Ato Boldon and women's world 200m champion Inger Miller.

According to comments on Arron’s web site, her decision to train with Smith came after she had visited four potential coaches in the USA and was motivated by the professional nature of the HSI structure and training infrastructure and the group’s motivation to have Arron join them.

"The group performs and the overall structure is very professional," writes Arron."My planning for the year to come will be to move to Los Angeles around the end of December or beginning of January.

"I will not be competing indoors during the winter and will come back to France around May/June for the outdoor season.

"My main focus for 2001 is on the IAAF World Championships in Edmonton."
