November 19 1998MonacoMonteCarlo - Lisbon has won the right to host the 2001 World Indoor Championships. Following a close contest, which required two rounds of voting, the IAAF Council decided to award the event to the Portuguese delegation. The rival bidders were Budapest and Borlange (Sweden) and since there was no outright winner at the end of the first round, Council were obliged to vote a second time and on this occasion Lisbon won with an absolute majority.

Lisbon will be paying travel and accommodation for all athletes, coaches and officials to the event which takes place in March. Portugal will also be hosting the IAAF World Cross Country Championships a year earlier in Vilamoura.
