Hosea Kiprop Rotich, who was making his marathon debut today won the Standard Chartered Nairobi International Marathon, beating his closest rival by three minutes.

The Nairobi Marathon is the first leg of the annual "Greatest Race on Earth" series of marathons (Nairobi, Singapore, Mumbai and Hong Kong). Teams from 33 countries are competing for a share of a prize pool of US $ 1.5 million.

Hosea Kiprop Rotich, 25, who started training as a marathon runner three years ago, was timed home in 2:10:21 and said he had no problems with the punishing course or even the high altitude that makes running in Nairobi a nightmare to even the world’s strongest runners.

“I can go another kilometre. This has opened the world for me and there is no stopping me,” said the athlete who trains in Kapsabet.

Kipchoge Kiplagat was second in 2:13:06 while Uganda’s Alex Maringa was third in 2:13:09.

Christopher Cheboiboch, the pre-race favourite who was runner-up in the New York City and Boston Marathons in 2002, and who has a personal best of 2:08:17, finished in fifth place, in 2:14:58.

WOMEN

Last year’s runner-up Irene Cherutich won the women’s race in 2:32:39 ahead of China’s Zhang Xin (2:37:26), and former Paris and Turin Marathon champion Beatrice Omwanza (2:39:07). Cherotich was third at the Lisbon Half Marathon last month.

Beatrice Ruto won the women’s 21km race in 1:10:52 with Anne Cheptanui following in 1:12:36 and Agnes Cherop third in 1:12:54.

The men’s Half Marathon was won by Philemon Getea in 1:00:25 as Moses Kororia came in second in 1:01:52. David Ruto was third in 1:01:54.

The race, run on a new route following previous year’s complaints by church goers, went on under clear sky on a warm Sunday morning.

The 15,000-plus runners and joggers combined to form a carnival mood in the routes west of the Nairobi’s Central Business District.
