On a warm sunny afternoon (17 C) of September 8, an international field of about 750 runners started in the 10th Novosibirsk Half Marathon, held this year as National Half Marathon Championship. The Half Marathon course is made up of a 3.5 km loop laid along the main street Krasniy Avenue, past beautiful Nikolskaya Chapel, the symbol of the city, with start and finish line on the central square.

Nothing, including good weather and flat course, interfered with the breaking of the long standing course record set by Yevgeniy Rybakov (01:03:33) in 2004. Kenyan Sammy Tum Kipkoech, was the first man home in a 1:02:40 course record. The defending champion Yevgeniy Rybakov crossed second in 1:03:04, beating his own record and becoming the Russian champion. Anatoliy Rybakov finished third in 1:03:23 beating his brother’s record too.

Russia’s Rashida Hairutdinova won the women’s race 1:10:38 but was far off the course record of Silvia Skvortsova (01:09:37) set 2001.

Men

Kenyans Sammy Tum Kipkoech and Hillary Lagat Kipkemboi, both 29, led a pack of 8 who broke away from the gun. This group which included the young and promising Russian 22-year-old twin brothers Yevgeniy and Anatoliy Rybakov, who have already medalled at European age championship level and Andrey Grigoriev, this year Nagano Marathon runner-up (2:13:32), passed through the 10km mark at 29.53.

By 15km the leading pack reduced to three – Kipkoech and Rybakov brothers. The rest 5 followed close behind led by Kenyan Kipkemboi.

Approximately two laps before the finish line Kipkoech made a bold surge and built up a lead on the brothers which he was never to lose.

Women

The presence of the experienced Russian marathon runners, Irina Timofeyeva, 37, 2006 Paris Marathon champion (2:27:19) and Larisa Zuzko, 38, who was second in Poma Marathon with 2:26:26 in 2006, set up the prospect of a great duel. However, the younger and ambitious trio of Olga Glok, Rashida Hairutdinova, and Natalia Kurbatova were not to let that happen.

Gradually the three – Hairutdinova, Timofeyeva and Glok – pulled away from the rest to finish in the same order, leaving the fourth Natalia Kurbatova almost 2 minutes behind the third finisher. Hairutdinova crossed in 1:10:38 far from Silvia Skvortsova’s course record.
