14 November 2000 – Copenhagen - Allan Hansen, a 54-year-old Dane, has run his 88th marathon this year - an unofficial world record - and says he aims to complete 105 races before the end of 2000.

Hansen finished Sunday's marathon in Copenhagen in three hours and 55 minutes. His average time in his previous 87 races this year was 4:01.

The Guinness Book of World Records lists 87 as the greatest number of marathons run by the same person in one calendar year, according to an Internet web site posting information about Hansen's progress.

It said officials from the Danish Athletics Association and Guinness World Records were monitoring Hansen's every race.

Hansen told a news conference on Sunday he planned to run from Paris to Copenhagen, a distance of some 1,200 kilometres (740 miles), next year. Before 2000, he had run 59 marathons over a period of 18 years.
