Vanderlei de Lima, who went on to win a bronze medal in the Olympic Games Marathon despite being attacked by a spectator when he led the race, has been voted Brazil's sportsman of the year.

De Lima won the poll organised by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and was presented with his trophy on Tuesday at a ceremony, where he also met the Greek spectator who helped rescue him and allowed him to finish.

Rank outsider De Lima was leading with around six kilometres to go when he was pushed off the road and into the crowd by a former Irish priest, who ran out from the crowd.
