Double triumph for Jackson at Jamaican Carifta trials

Kingston, JamaicaShericka Jackson of Vere Technical High School was a double winner at Jamaica’s Carifta Games trials, which ended at the National Stadium on Sunday (7).

Jackson, one of Jamaica’s best sprinters, who was too young for last year’s World Youth Championships, won the double in the Under-17 girls’ 200 and 400m.

She stopped the clock in 23.94 to beat Edwin Allen High’s Saqukine Cameron (24.51) in the 200m and returned late in the afternoon to top the 400m field ahead of her schoolmate Olivia James.

Odail Todd of Green Island won the boys’ Under-17 200m in 22.21 while Julian Forte topped the boys’ Under-20 field in 21.33.

Odane Skeen of Wolmer’s Boys’ clocked a wind-assisted (4.0 m/s) 10.43 seconds to win the U-17 100m while the Under-20 equivalent went to Manchester High's Brandon Tomlinson in 10.50secs (2.9 m/s).

Kadisha Dallas of Holmwood ran 11.75 and Natasha Morrison of Glengoffe with 11.47 took the girls’ Under-17 and Under-20 events respectively.

In the girls’ 400m Hurdles, Ristananna Tracey of Edwin Allen (59.99) and World Youth silver medalist Danielle Dowie of Wolmer’s (61.59) were first and second respectively in the Under-20 section.

Dwayne Extol of Wolmer’s won the boys’ Under-20 event in 52.16 ahead of St. Jago’s Nolan Williams (52.44).

Tonique Sobah of St. Jago edged out Immaculate High’s and World Youth finalist Samantha Elliott, 14.01 to 14.02 in the Under-20 girls 100m hurdles.

In the Under-17 100m Hurdles, Megan Simmonds of St. Andrew High (14.25) beat Holmwood Technical’s Osheen Erskine (14.31).

Stefan Fennell of Kingston College (KC) ran 14.05 to win the boys’ Under-20 110m Hurdles while Davian Dennis of St. Elizabeth Technical took the boys’ Under-17 100m hurdles in 13.56.

World Youth bronze Traves Smikle of Calabar and Candecia Bernard of St Hugh’s high were in record-breaking forms.

Smikle threw 59.52m and Bernard 48.71m to set new Jamaica junior records in the Under-20 boys’ and girls’ Discus Throw respectively.
