Ethiopia's long distance legends Haile Gebrselassie and Gete Wami were among a group of track stars received by their president here on Sunday.

The pair, winners of the men's and women's 10,000m respectively at last month's World Championships in Seville, were joined at the reception by the women's 5000 and 1500m runners Ayelech Worku and Kutre Dulecha, who both came away from Seville with bronzes.

Men's 10,000m bronze medallist Assefa Mezegebu, who had gone down with typhus in June, was also present at the reception.

President Negasso Gidada presented Gebrselassie with the national flag to mark his achievement in being crowned world 10,000m champion four times in a row.

The Ethiopians, who sent 25 athletes to Seville, came away with five medals, putting them in eighth place in the medal's table.

Gidada also used the occasion to give the group some encouragement in the run-up to the African Games starting Friday in Johannesburg.
