31 October 2001 –
London - Ethiopian distance great Haile
Gebrselassie will make his marathon
debut at next year’s London Marathon,
organizers announced Wednesday.
Gebrselassie, 28, is a two-time Olympic
gold medalist and four-time world
champion in the 10,000 metres. He also
holds world records in the 5000m and
10,000m.
Gebrselassie won the World Half Marathon Championship in Bristol, England, last month in his debut at the distance. He has repeatedly said that he planned to switch to the marathon.
“I was looking to move up to the marathon distance after winning the World Half Marathon last month,” Gebrselassie said. “I am delighted to run my first marathon in London as April is the perfect time to fit in with my preparations. This is a whole new challenge for me.” Gebrselassie’s entry marks a major coup for London organizers.
“Everyone will agree that Haile Gebrselassie is the best ever 10,000 metre runner in the world,” race director Dave Bedford said. “Following his performance at the World Half Marathon, I have never been so excited about an athlete’s debut at the marathon distance.” The London Marathon pays top appearance fees to attract the world’s elite runners. The fee for Gebrselassie wasn’t disclosed, but his manager, Jos Hermens, said London offered “a great package.” The race takes place on Sunday, April 14.
