member German team for the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, was announced by the DLV two days after the national Youth Championships in Bochum-Wattenscheid.

Among the 31 men and 37 women there will be the two athletes who won gold two years ago at the 2004 edition of the Championships in Grosseto, Lisa Ryzih (Pole Vault) and Vivian Zimmer (Javelin Throw).

Almost parallel to her older sister by 11 years, Nastja, who seven years after her surprising win at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Maebashi (Japan) finally improved her then best (4.50m) to 4.61m, Lisa improved her personal best on 7 July to 4.35 m.

In Grosseto, where she was, as before at the 2003 World Youth Championships, the youngest champion, she jumped 4.30m. In 2005, due to an injury which she suffered during a PE class in school, she faced some setbacks.

Even worse was Vivian Zimmer’s situation, who, after a 60m throw, was looking forward to compete at the 2005 World Youth Championships. Two elbow surgeries forced her to sit out for 9 months until she could start back practice at the beginning of 2006.

Her first competition was at the beginning of July. On the day of her 19th birthday, she won her 3rd national junior title in Bochum-Wattenscheid. She is hoping to throw further in Beijing than in Grosseto (58.50 m).

Lisa Ryzih, on the contrary, thinks in regards to the Pole Vault: “Possibly you have to jump a World Junior record to win! “

Thanks to her improvement to 18.21m, shot putter Denise Hinrichs, who competes like the former three-time World and Olympic champion Astrid Kumbernuss for the SC Neubrandenburg, is one of the biggest German hope for Beijing. In spring she was stopped by an injury though. Not being in best shape yet, she threw 16.79m at the German Junior Championships. She is not a clear favourite anymore.

There are a few talented athletes on the German team for Beijing who have a mother or a father who were world class athletes themselves. Manuel Ilg, who is nominated for the 4x400m relay, is the son of the first 3000m Steeplechase World Champion Patriz Ilg.

The mother of the very talented 800m runner Robin Schembera (1:47.29 at the age of 17), whose maiden name was Antje Schröder, competed in the 800m final at the first IAAF World Championships 1983 in Helsinki. Shortly before she ran the 800m in 1:57.57.

Falko Zauber, the other Junior champion in the middle distances, has former DDR champion in the 1500m from 1981 (3:59,90 minutes), Angelika Zauber (former Kuhse) and the 1500m DDR Indoor Champion (1982 and 1983) Lutz Zauber as parents.

The team will fly in three groups on 6, 7 and 8 August from Munich to Beijing. Due to a better climate athletes will get acclimated in Qinhuangdao (Province Hebei), which is 400km away, and not in the Chinese capital before flying to Beijing when competition starts.
