Injury threatens Kamathi’s Championships hopes

13 June 2002 – Nairobi, Kenya - World 10,000 metres champion Charles Kamathi is nursing a nagging groin injury which he fears could affect his performance during the Kenyan Championships next week.

This explains his conspicuous absence from the Kenya Police AAA Championships 31 May -1 June.

Kamathi has been training at altitude in Nyahururu, some 150 kilometres north-west of Nairobi with his siblings James and Michael Kamathi.  “I have been training sparingly in the hope that this injury will heal, but it keeps recurring. This is slowing my training down and is causing me a lot of concern,” he said on telephone from his Nyahururu base.

“I have to slow down my training because if I go full blast it may cause problems during the trials. Don’t rule me out, nonetheless,” he said.  “The injury won’t stop me from running my best. My speed and endurance is very good. I keep praying that it gives me a break during the trials,” he said.
