John Smith gives up his day job…
7 November 2001 – Leading US track coach John Smith has resigned his collegiate coaching position at UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) to concentrate his professional career on his work with the HS International management and coaching group.

Smith, whose tenure at UCLA has stretched over 17 years, announced that his resignation will be effective on November 30.

“I am very excited about all the opportunities that I have before me,” said Smith in a statement released by HSI. “This change allows me to focus 100 percent on HSI both on and off the track. It has been a wonderful 17-year relationship with UCLA and I will always be a Bruin. I have had the pleasure of having has an influence on so many young people as a college coach and those years will be cherished.

At HSI, Smith trains Olympians Maurice Greene, Ato Boldon, Inger Miller, Bernard Williams and Jon Drummond, in addition to many other talented track and field athletes. Now with a full time commitment to HSI, Smith’s plans include publishing articles; accepting more speaking engagements and making more personal appearances.
