Micah Kogo of Kenya and Irina Mikitenko of Germany were the winners of the Parelloop (Pearl Run) 10Km in the southern Dutch town of Brunssum on Sunday (3).
Kogo stopped the clock in 27:15, the fastest in the world this year. He was eleven seconds ahead of compatriot Mike Kigen, who finished second.
Mikitenko was in a class of her own in the women's race. With her winning time of 32:06 she finished 39 seconds ahead of Elizeba Cherono, who last Sunday won the Venloop Half Marathon in Venlo in a personal best of 1:11:26.
Kogo set a World record of 27:01 on the fast Brunssum course two years ago (29 March 2009). Kogo and Kigen got off a blistering start, passing the five kilometre mark in 13:29. At that point another Kenyan, Stanley Salil, was already fifteen seconds back in third. Kogo continued to press the pace and in the end he was too strong for his compatriot. Meanwhile two other Kenyans, Mark Kiptoo and Philip Langat, were sprinting for the third place position. Kiptoo won that battle to finish third with Langat, who finished second in last week's Venloop half marathon (1:02:32, PB), ending fourth.
The 24-year-old Kogo lost his World record last year in The Netherlands. In the oldest road race in the country, the Utrecht Singelloop, his compatriot Leonard Patrick Komon ran the first 10Km on the road under the 27-minute barrier, clocking 26:44 last 26 September.
Mikitenko cruised to a comfortable victory in the women's race. In the first five kilometres Mikitenko and Tabitha Wambui Gisha ran together, passing the five-kilometre marker in 16:06 and 16:04 respectively. But in the second half, Mikitenko broke away.
