elects Sportsmen and Women of 2001

Montevideo, Uruguay – The prominent
Uruguay daily newspaper “Diario
Ultimas Noticias”
has published its annual selection
of the leading sportsmen and
women in the Latin American nation.
Four athletes were recognized by the newspaper: Monica Falcioni (long jump and triple jump); Heber Viera (100/200 metres); Andres Silva (400/800 metres) and the blind athlete Jorge Llerena (100/200 metres, long jump).
Diario Ultimas Noticias also discerned a special award for “Dirigente del Año to a regular contributor to the IAAF web site, Jose Maria Lombardo of the Uruguay Athletics Federation.. Other awards were made to the president of the Uruguay ice hockey and skating federation, Ernesto Cajarvilla; the Minister of Sport, Jaime Trobo and the President of the Uruguay Olympic Committee, Dr Julio C. Maglione.
