Men 400 metres First round Heats

Underlining their position as favourites for the 4x400 relay, American 400m trio Tyree Washington, Jerome Young and Calvin Harrison won their heats in the first round this afternoon.

Harrison and Yopung cruised to comfortable victories, while world leader Washington led in a tight finish for the minor places. In what was the toughest heat, Daniel Caines (GBR) was second, Leslie Djone (FRA) third, with European champion Ingo Schultz (GER) relegated to fourth. He progresses to the next round as one of the non-automatic qualifiers.

World Cup winner Michael Blackwood (JAM) recorded the fastest time of the day in the first heat with 45.13, leading in Eric Milazar (MRI) 45.15. Reigning champion Avard Moncur (BAH) was third across the line in 45.40.

Heat five provided some thrills for the vocal Parisian crowd, with Marc Raquil (FRA) displaying a barnstorming finish to take the race.

Other heats went to Gary Kikaya (COD) and Christopher Brown (BAH).
